I organized and paid for the dream family vacation for my husband’s 35th birthday. On the morning of departure I woke up alone and found a message informing me that my ticket had been transferred to my mother-in-law’s friend. I boarded the next plane to join them, and I very quickly realized that not only was I excluded — I had been replaced.
Have you ever woken up with the feeling that the world is slightly tilted on its axis? That’s exactly how it was that morning when we were supposed to leave for our dream family vacation.
My husband, Mark, was turning 35 this year. For months he had been saying that he dreamed of a real vacation with his parents.
We didn’t see my in-laws very often. They lived three states away.
We didn’t have children yet, I have a good job, so I thought: why not give him the best birthday present?
HE KEPT TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH HE WANTED TO SPEND A REAL VACATION WITH HIS PARENTS.
He kept talking about how much he wanted to spend a real vacation with his parents.
I organized everything.
I booked an all-inclusive stay in Florida, paid for flights and a five-star resort. I took care of every smallest detail.
His parents, Margaret and Arthur, seemed very grateful. Margaret even sent me a message saying how much she was looking forward to these “shared, intimate moments”.
On the night before the flight I was a bundle of energy.
AND THEN SOMETHING HAPPENED THAT I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN AS A WARNING SIGN.
And then something happened that I should have taken as a warning sign.
Mark came into the bedroom with a steaming cup.
– I made you chamomile tea, darling.
He was smiling calmly in a way that seemed slightly forced, but the strangest thing was the tea itself. Mark never made me tea. He always said it was too complicated.
– Oh? Thank you, that’s incredibly thoughtful of you – I said.
HE CHUCKLED. – YOU’LL HAVE TO GET SOME SLEEP BEFORE THE MORNING FLIGHT!
He chuckled. – You’ll have to get some sleep before the morning flight! You worked all evening, I thought you might be too excited to fall asleep.
Mark had never made me tea before.
I laughed.
He sat on the edge of the bed and we talked for a while as I finished the infusion.
I thought he was simply being nice. Maybe it was his way of showing gratitude. I trusted him. Why wouldn’t I? He was my husband.
SOON AFTER, I STARTED TO FEEL DROWSY.
Soon after, I started to feel drowsy. I closed the suitcase after one last check to see if everything was packed, and I went to bed.
That’s the last thing I remember.
I trusted him. Why wouldn’t I?
The next morning I woke up in absolute silence.
It took a good ten minutes before I realized how bright the sunlight coming through the window was. My heart jumped into my throat and I leapt out of bed.
? MARK! WHAT TIME IS IT?
– Mark! What time is it?
His side of the bed was empty.
– Mark?
I grabbed my phone.
His side of the bed was empty.
THERE WAS A NEW MESSAGE FROM MARK.
There was a new message from Mark.
I tried to wake you, but you were sleeping like a rock. We couldn’t miss the flight. I logged into your airline account and changed the ticket to Mom’s friend’s name so it wouldn’t go to waste. I hope you understand.
I sat down so abruptly that I almost fell off the bed.
I stared at the words until they began to blur.
I changed the ticket to Mom’s friend’s name.
I HAVE NEVER SLEPT THROUGH AN ALARM IN MY LIFE!
I have never slept through an alarm in my life! Well, maybe once in college when I drank a calming valerian infusion, but that was an exception.
But for me to sleep so deeply that he couldn’t wake me, and for him to give my ticket to his mother’s friend and fly without me?
The realization hit me like a physical blow.
Chamomile.
I didn’t cry. I was too angry to cry. Instead, I opened the airline app.
I HAVE NEVER SLEPT THROUGH AN ALARM IN MY LIFE!
I have never slept through an alarm in my life!
There was one seat left on the next flight to Orlando. In business class. It cost a fortune, but I didn’t care.
I booked it.
I didn’t text Mark. I didn’t call his parents.
I took my bag, locked the house and drove to the airport.
WHEN I LANDED IN FLORIDA, THE SUN WAS BEGINNING TO SET.
When I landed in Florida, the sun was beginning to set. I took a taxi straight to the resort. At the reception desk I showed my ID — everything was in my name anyway — and I received the room number.
My blood was boiling as I walked down the long, carpeted corridor. I reached the door of the suite I had paid for and knocked.
A woman opened the door.
– How can I help you?
I narrowed my eyes, scanning her from head to toe. Around thirty, attractive. The outrage I already felt hardened into betrayal, pulling the darkest reserves of resentment from me.
I SMILED. – YOU MUST BE MY MOTHER-IN-LAW’S FRIEND?
I smiled. – You must be my mother-in-law’s friend?
She frowned. – Excuse me. I think you have the wrong door.
– Oh no – I replied. – This room is booked under my husband’s name. I know that very well, because I made the reservation and paid for the entire vacation.
She hesitated, glancing toward the bathroom.
– Husband?
BEFORE SHE COULD SAY ANYTHING MORE, MARK WALKED INTO THE LIVING ROOM OF THE SUITE.
Before she could say anything more, Mark walked into the living room of the suite.
When he saw me, his face went from tanned and relaxed to ghostly pale.
– What are you doing here? – his voice cracked.
It was pathetic.
– I paid for this trip, Mark. Why wouldn’t I be here? – I asked. I looked at the woman. – Besides, I wanted to see who replaced me. You must be the “friend” whose ticket couldn’t go to waste.
THE WOMAN STEPPED BACK REFLEXIVELY.
The woman stepped back reflexively. – Replace you?
– Why are we standing in the doorway?
A sharp, familiar voice cut through the tension.
Margaret came out of the hallway, a designer handbag under her arm. She looked completely calm until she saw me.
For a split second she looked like she had seen a ghost.
THEN HER FACE CHANGED.
Then her face changed. I could see the gears turning behind her eyes.
– Everyone is so surprised by my presence – I turned to Mark. – Is it because of the tea?
Mark swallowed. He couldn’t look me in the eye.
– Mom said adding valerian would help you sleep before the flight. You were so stressed.
– Valerian? The plant I once had a strong reaction to?
The corridor fell silent.
A couple walking by slowed down, watching the scene. A hotel employee stopped by the elevator, pretending to review documents.
Margaret stiffened. – This is inappropriate, Chloe. We can talk privately. You’re making a scene.
– No. We will talk here.
I looked at the “friend”.
SHE LOOKED GENUINELY CONFUSED.
She looked genuinely confused.
– Who are you really? I was told Margaret was bringing a friend to replace me. I just don’t understand why my mother-in-law’s friend would be alone with my husband in a hotel room.
The woman raised her hands. – Please wait a moment. My name is Elena. Margaret is friends with my mother. She told me her son was separated. That I should use this trip to get to know him better. She said his marriage was already over.
– Separated?
I looked at Mark. – Show me your hand, Mark.
– What? – he stammered.
– Your hand. Are you wearing a wedding ring?
He turned crimson and slipped his hand into his pocket, but it was too late. I already knew.
– Mom said…
– Mom said – I cut him off. – That’s the second time I’ve heard that today. Do you do everything Margaret tells you?
HE STARED AT THE FLOOR.
He stared at the floor. – She said it would be easier this way. That we don’t match and that I need a fresh start.
– Easier for whom, Mark? Easier for your mother to erase me? To matchmake you with my money?
He didn’t answer. He couldn’t.
Elena grabbed her purse from the couch.
– I’m leaving – she said firmly. – I want nothing to do with this. This is disgusting.
SHE PAUSED AT THE DOOR AND LOOKED AT ME MORE GENTLY.
She paused at the door and looked at me more gently.
– I’m really sorry. I didn’t know. I was told you left long ago.
– I believe you.
And I truly did. She looked as deceived as I was.
When Elena disappeared into the elevator, Margaret sighed sharply, crossing her arms.
? I HOPE YOU’RE SATISFIED.
– I hope you’re satisfied. You made a scene and ruined a very pleasant evening.
– No, Margaret. – I took out my phone. – I am not satisfied. And this evening is about to become much worse for you.
– What are you doing? – Mark asked.
– I paid for the flights – I said, tapping the screen. – I paid for the hotel. For the meals. I already spoke to reception before I came here.
– What are you talking about? – Margaret hissed.
? EVERYTHING THAT IS REFUNDABLE, I AM CANCELING RIGHT NOW.
– Everything that is refundable, I am canceling right now. In ten minutes the rooms you’re staying in will no longer be paid for.
Mark’s eyes widened.
– You can’t just cancel everything! We’re here! Where are we supposed to go?
I shrugged. – I’m also canceling the return flights. I hope you have enough money in your personal account for a last-minute ticket home. Although, knowing you, Margaret probably manages your allowance.
Margaret’s voice became shrill. – This was supposed to be a family vacation! You are vindictive!
I LOOKED HER IN THE EYES WITHOUT BLINKING.
I looked her in the eyes without blinking.
– You tried to replace me while I was asleep, Margaret. That’s not family. That’s a conspiracy.
She flinched.
– I am filing for divorce – I added, looking at Mark. – You listened to your mother instead of standing by your wife. You are not a husband. You are a passenger in your own life.
Mark said nothing. He stood in silence, staring at the floor.
I TURNED AND WALKED AWAY.
I turned and walked away.
That evening I sat alone at the airport bar.
This was not the Florida vacation I had imagined. My phone vibrated every few minutes — refund confirmations and messages from Mark.
“Please, talk to me.”
“Mom is crying.”
WE HAVE NOWHERE TO STAY.”
“We have nowhere to stay.”
I didn’t open them. I just deleted them.
For the first time in a long time I did not feel confused. I didn’t feel like I was trying to assemble a puzzle with missing pieces.
The air was no longer heavy.
I felt that this was the end. And honestly? I had never felt better.
