My dog suddenly began frantically scratching the wall right behind my eight-month-old daughter’s crib. At first, we were convinced he had simply gone crazy, but when we looked inside the wall, we discovered something truly horrifying 😯😲
My daughter was only eight months old when something began that at first looked like an ordinary cold. She coughed almost constantly, especially at night. It was a strange cough — dry and loud, as if something was vibrating inside her tiny chest. Sometimes her breathing became so shallow that I would wake up in the middle of the night and listen for a long moment just to make sure her chest was still rising.
We visited the pediatrician several times. The doctor carefully listened to her lungs, asked a few questions, and eventually concluded that it was most likely infant asthma. He prescribed an inhaler and medication.
Despite following all the recommendations, weeks passed without any improvement. Sometimes it even seemed like my daughter was getting worse. She became lethargic, ate very little, and often woke up at night, gasping for air.
At the same time, our golden retriever Daisy began behaving very strangely. She had always been a calm and affectionate dog who could lie by the crib for hours, quietly watching the baby. Suddenly, however, she started causing chaos in the nursery.
Every time I left the room, I could hear intense scratching from the hallway. I would come back and see the same scene: Daisy standing by the wall right behind the crib, scratching at the drywall with all her strength. She tore off the wallpaper, left deep scratches, and dug as if she were trying to reach something hidden inside.
At first, I thought she was bored or jealous of the baby. I yelled at her, pulled her away, and shut the door. At one point, I even installed a baby gate so she couldn’t get into the room.
BUT DAISY SOMEHOW KNOCKED IT OVER AND GOT BACK INSIDE. EVERY SINGLE TIME, SHE RETURNED TO THE EXACT SAME SPOT AND SCRATCHED THE WALL WITH ALMOST DESPERATE DETERMINATION.
After a few days, I noticed that her paws had developed bleeding cracks. She was literally tearing the pads of her paws against the wall. I was exhausted and irritable because I was barely sleeping due to my daughter’s coughing. I was beginning to think the dog had simply gone mad.
Yesterday evening, I lost my patience. I walked into the room and saw that Daisy had made a huge hole in the wall. The drywall was broken, pieces of plaster lay scattered across the carpet, and she was still scratching at the edges of the opening, as if trying to make it even bigger.
I grabbed her sharply by the collar and pulled her away, shouting in anger. My heart was pounding — all I could think about were the repair costs. But when I bent down and looked into the dark hole in the wall, I froze in terror 😨😲 Now I want to tell this story to all parents so you can be more careful 😢
A heavy, musty smell was coming from inside the wall. It was so strong that I instinctively grimaced.
I turned on the flashlight on my phone and shone it into the inside of the wall. The beam of light moved across wooden beams and insulation — and at that very moment, a cold shiver ran through me.
The entire space behind my daughter’s crib was covered with thick, black patches. It wasn’t ordinary dirt or dampness. A dense layer of black mold had spread across the wood and insulation. I immediately understood that something was very wrong.
A MOMENT LATER, AS I LOOKED MORE CLOSELY, I NOTICED A THIN, DAMP STREAK ON A PIPE LEADING FROM THE NEIGHBORING BATHROOM. IT TURNED OUT IT HAD BEEN LEAKING FOR A LONG TIME. MOISTURE HAD BEEN BUILDING UP INSIDE THE WALL FOR YEARS, CREATING PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR TOXIC MOLD.
And that wall was located right behind my child’s crib.
At that moment, my hands started to tremble. Suddenly, I realized that my daughter might not have asthma at all. For weeks, she had been breathing air filled with toxic mold spores.
And all that time, Daisy had been sensing a smell that we were unable to detect. She scratched at the wall, destroyed the house, and injured her own paws just to reach the source of the danger.
