My husband Mark and I have a small house in the countryside. We used to go there almost every weekend. We planted flowers, worked in the garden, had barbecues, and relaxed away from the city and the noise.
But one day, everything changed. Mark started constantly refusing to go. One time he had urgent work, another time he was tired, then he had a headache, or he would say, “we’ll go next time.” At first, I didn’t find it strange.
Until one day, our neighbor from the countryside called me.
— You know — she said casually — yesterday I saw your husband at the house.
At first, I didn’t even understand.
— You must be mistaken — I replied. — He was at work all day.
— No, I’m sure. He got out of the car and was carrying things out for quite a while — she said calmly.
I put the phone down, but something tightened inside me. The worst thoughts began to flood my mind. Why was he there and didn’t tell me? What was he hiding from me? And most importantly — what was he actually doing there?
The following weekend, Mark once again said he wasn’t going anywhere.
— Then maybe I’ll go by myself, get some fresh air — I suggested carefully.
He stiffened immediately.
— No — he replied too quickly. — I don’t want you going there. I’d rather you stay home.
And that was the moment everything became clear. If there were nothing suspicious there, he wouldn’t forbid me from going. When he left the house, I decided to follow him. He got into the car and drove toward the countryside.
I waited a moment and then set off after him.
The closer I got to the house, the faster my heart pounded. My hands were trembling, and I felt like I was doing something terrible, but I couldn’t turn back anymore. I walked up to the door, took a deep breath, and went inside.
AND THAT’S WHEN I REALIZED I HAD BEEN FOOLISH TO EXPECT I’D FIND A LOVER THERE… BECAUSE WHAT I SAW WAS FAR WORSE 😨😨
The house was filled with equipment. Brand-new televisions, laptops, tablets, cameras, tools still in their packaging. In the corners stood bags, and inside them — jewelry, watches, chains, earrings. On the table and in the drawers lay stacks of cash. There was so much of it that my legs nearly gave out beneath me.
It didn’t look like a hobby, or a business, or random collecting. It looked like a storage facility.
I didn’t make a scene. I decided to talk to him directly.
When Mark came back, I asked only:
— Explain to me what this is.
At first, he tried to joke, then said they were “temporary things” and that I didn’t understand anything. But when I told him I had seen everything with my own eyes, he fell silent.
AND THEN HE TOLD THE TRUTH.
It turned out he had been fired from his job almost two years earlier. He hadn’t told anyone. At first, he looked for new work, then he started taking out loans, and when the money ran out — he made a decision that changed everything.
For the past two years, he had been breaking into houses. He chose empty homes, watched people, went in at night, and took everything that had value. Some of it he sold right away, the rest he stored in our country house to sell gradually and avoid raising suspicion.
I looked at the man I had been living with and didn’t recognize him. The house I had considered safe turned out to be a warehouse of stolen goods. And the man I trusted had been living a double life, risking his freedom every single day.
In that moment, I understood one thing:
it would have been better if he really had a lover.
Because this truth was far more terrifying.
