The wheels of the wheelchair jolted sharply over the stones as the path narrowed until it was barely wide enough for one person. Daniel sat in silence, gripping the armrests tighter and tighter, while Emma pushed the chair forward with confidence.
Beside them, Rex circled nervously — Daniel’s German shepherd, a former service dog. Usually calm, he was now growling softly and kept trying to step in front of the wheelchair, as if he sensed something was wrong.
“Maybe this is far enough? It’s dangerous here,” Daniel said quietly, looking at the crumbling edge of the path.
Emma forced a smile.
“You keep sitting at home all the time. You need some fresh air.”
Since the injury, he had barely gone anywhere. Once a strong soldier, respected even by commanders, he now struggled to endure other people’s pity.
And Emma… at first, she cared for him with such tenderness that no one would have believed how much the news of his inheritance changed her. After his father’s death, Daniel inherited a huge construction company, a house, and enormous bank accounts that no one had ever even mentioned before.
The path led them to the most dangerous place — a narrow rocky ledge above the abyss. Emma stopped. Something cold and unfamiliar flashed across her face.
“Forgive me,” she said, barely audibly.
And suddenly, she shoved the wheelchair forward with force.
Daniel disappeared over the edge of the cliff together with the wheelchair.
His scream broke off somewhere below.
Emma stood motionless, breathing heavily. Then she quickly pulled out her phone, already forming a story in her mind about a tragic accident. Everything looked perfect…
But three hours later, someone knocked on the door of the house.

Rex was standing on the threshold.
The dog was covered in mud and scratches, panting heavily, but he refused to leave the door. Between his teeth, he held the bloodstained sleeve of Daniel’s jacket.
Emma felt everything inside her freeze.
“No… that’s impossible…” she whispered.
A few minutes later, the police arrived in front of the house. One of the rescuers watched her far too closely, as if trying to read her reaction.
“Your husband is alive,” he said curtly. “The dog kept him on a rocky ledge for almost two hours, until hikers heard the barking.”

It turned out the wheelchair had not fallen straight into the abyss. It had become wedged on a rocky projection, and Daniel — despite his injured legs — had managed to hold on to the metal frame with his hands. Rex stayed beside him the entire time. He barked until he nearly lost his voice, refusing to let his owner lose consciousness.
But the real nightmare was still waiting for Emma.
Investigators quickly found footage from a camera in the parking area near the hiking trail. The video clearly showed Emma switching off the wheelchair brakes a few minutes before the walk. They also uncovered a phone conversation with a lawyer about her husband’s estate.
When Daniel returned home the next day, he looked exhausted but calm. He stared at Emma for a long time, as though he were seeing her for the first time.
“Do you know what is most frightening?” he said quietly. “In war, I always knew where the blow would come from. But in my own home… I was defenseless.”
Emma remained silent, without lifting her eyes.
Rex lay down at his master’s feet and closed his tired eyes. A heavy silence settled over the room, and suddenly one thing became clear: sometimes a person is saved not by strength or money, but by someone who stays beside them when everyone else has already betrayed them.
