“IF WE DON’T GET HIM TO A HOSPITAL WITHIN FIFTEEN MINUTES AND ADMINISTER THE ANTIVENOM IMMEDIATELY, WE’RE GOING TO LOSE HIM,” the doctor said anxiously as he checked the man’s pulse.
The ambulance was stopped on a forest road in the middle of a remote wilderness area. Just minutes earlier, the emergency team had found a tourist who had lost consciousness after being bitten by an extremely venomous snake. His skin was growing paler by the minute, his breathing was becoming increasingly shallow, and every passing moment could be his last.
The nurse looked at the patient and quietly asked:
“How far is the nearest hospital?”
“At least a thirty-minute drive,” the driver replied.
The doctor frowned.
“Then we won’t make it in time.”
For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then suddenly, the driver remembered something important.
“There’s still the old bridge over the river. If we take the shortcut across it, we’ll cut the route almost in half.”
The nurse immediately shook her head.
“But that bridge has been abandoned for years. They say it’s barely holding together.”
“I know,” the driver replied. “But we have no other choice.”
The doctor looked once more at the unconscious man.
“We have to risk it. If we take the normal road, he won’t survive until we reach the hospital.”
A few seconds later, the siren wailed again, and the ambulance sped across the savanna.
THE PATIENT LAY UNCONSCIOUS. HIS CONDITION WAS GETTING WORSE LITERALLY MINUTE BY MINUTE.
The nurse kept her eyes fixed on the monitors.
“His pressure is dropping.”
“Hold on, my friend,” the doctor said quietly. “Not yet.”
Soon, a wide river appeared ahead of them. Stretching across it was that very old wooden bridge.
Near the riverbank, several elephants were peacefully drinking water.
The nurse noticed them first.
“What if the elephants attack us?”
THE DRIVER GRIPPED THE STEERING WHEEL MORE TIGHTLY.
“Then we can only hope we get across in time.”
The ambulance kept racing forward.
With every second, the bridge drew closer.
The old planks looked so worn that it was hard to believe they were still hanging over the water.
“Faster,” the doctor said. “We have very little time left.”
The driver pressed harder on the gas pedal. The ambulance rolled onto the beginning of the bridge. But as soon as the front wheels touched the first boards, a powerful crack rang out.
The old wood could not bear the weight of the vehicle. First one beam snapped, then another. A moment later, a large section of the bridge collapsed into the river.
THE DRIVER SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES. THE AMBULANCE STOPPED ONLY A FEW METERS FROM THE DROP.
Everyone inside froze.
“No…” the nurse whispered.
Ahead of them, there was now only water and piles of scattered planks.
On the other side of the river, the road leading to the hospital still existed.
But reaching it seemed impossible.
The doctor looked at the patient.
“We’re losing him.”
THE NURSE COULD BARELY HOLD BACK HER TEARS.
“There’s no other road.”
At that moment, one of the elephants raised its head and looked toward the ambulance. After a few seconds, the other animals also noticed the vehicle.
The whole herd slowly moved through the water. Their massive shapes came closer and closer.
The driver turned pale.
“This is the end. We’re done for.”
“That’s all we needed,” the nurse said nervously.
The elephants kept walking. Soon, they reached the place where the bridge had collapsed.
THE PEOPLE IN THE AMBULANCE WATCHED EVERY SINGLE MOVEMENT WITH ENORMOUS TENSION.
But then something completely unexpected happened. 🫣😱
One of the elephants stopped beside the scattered planks and, with its long trunk, lifted a large wooden beam.
A second elephant did exactly the same. Moments later, a third joined in.
At first, the rescue workers could not even understand what was happening.
But gradually, the animals began carrying pieces of the structure toward the destroyed section of the bridge.
The elephants worked one after another.
THEY PLACED THE HEAVY BEAMS SIDE BY SIDE AS IF THEY WERE PERFORMING A TASK WHOSE PURPOSE WAS KNOWN ONLY TO THEM.
Within a minute, a level pathway of planks and beams had begun to take shape.
The animals continued bringing more pieces from the collapsed bridge.
Soon, a crossing once again connected the two riverbanks.
The nurse stared in disbelief.
“I can’t believe this…”
Even the doctor could not find any words.
None of them had ever witnessed anything like it before.
WHEN THE WORK WAS FINISHED, THE ELEPHANTS STEPPED BACK AND STOPPED.
As if they were waiting for something.
The driver cautiously got out and inspected the makeshift crossing.
The structure appeared stable enough.
“It’s our only chance.”
He climbed back behind the wheel.
The ambulance slowly moved forward.
Everyone held their breath.
THE WHEELS CAREFULLY ROLLED ACROSS THE IMPROVISED BRIDGE.
A few seconds felt like an eternity.
But the structure held.
The ambulance safely reached the opposite side of the river.
“We made it!” the nurse shouted.
The driver immediately pressed down on the accelerator.
The ambulance once again sped toward the hospital at maximum speed.
A few minutes later, they arrived at the emergency department.
DOCTORS IMMEDIATELY ADMINISTERED THE ANTIVENOM AND BEGAN TREATMENT.
The fight for the patient’s life continued for many more hours.
Only late that evening did the chief physician come out to speak with the ambulance crew.
A smile appeared on his face.
“He’s going to live.”
The paramedics finally let out the breath they had been holding in relief.
