Sophie and Mia had been inseparable since childhood. They did everything together — sleepovers, family vacations, even moving into the same college dorm. Years later, when Mia bought her first house, she insisted Sophie spend as much time there as she wanted.
There was only one rule.
“Don’t go into the attic.”
At first, Sophie laughed it off. “What, you’ve got ghosts up there?”
Mia smiled tightly. “Just… promise me.”
And Sophie did. But promises have a way of crumbling when curiosity grows.
Every time Sophie stayed over, she’d notice it. The way Mia glanced up nervously whenever the ceiling creaked. The way she always kept the attic door locked, even in broad daylight. Once, Sophie even caught her climbing down the ladder at 3 a.m., pale and shaken.
When Sophie asked, Mia only muttered, “You don’t want to know.”
That answer made Sophie want to know more than ever.
One rainy afternoon, while Mia was out running errands, Sophie noticed something strange. The attic key, usually hidden away, had been left on the kitchen counter. Almost like it was waiting for her.
Her heart hammered as she climbed the narrow ladder. The air grew musty, thick with dust. She flicked on the light — and froze.
The attic wasn’t filled with boxes or old furniture. It was a shrine.
Dozens of photographs covered the walls, all of Sophie. Childhood pictures, candid snapshots from school, even recent images she didn’t remember anyone taking. Neatly pinned, carefully arranged. Beneath them sat stacks of letters — all written in Mia’s handwriting, never sent.
And in the center, on a small wooden table, lay Sophie’s old teddy bear. The one she’d lost at age seven.
Her breath caught. “Mia…” she whispered.
The sound of the front door slamming echoed below. Footsteps creaked on the stairs.
Mia’s voice trembled. “Sophie? You weren’t supposed to see this.”
Sophie turned, her best friend standing in the doorway of the attic, tears brimming in her eyes.
“I wasn’t trying to scare you,” Mia said, her voice breaking. “I just… couldn’t let go. You’ve always been my person. I never wanted to lose you.”
For a long, heavy silence, Sophie just stared, torn between fear and heartbreak.
It wasn’t evil. It wasn’t malicious. It was obsession born out of love — too much love.
And as she descended the attic stairs that day, Sophie realized: sometimes, the people you trust most are the ones who hide the deepest secrets.
