Alex was already standing at the boarding gate and glanced at his watch once again. Only a few minutes remained before departure. The flight would last two hours, and in three hours he had the most important job interview of his life. He had worked hard to reach this day. For months, he had been sending out résumés, going through multiple stages of recruitment, waiting for responses. And finally, a large company had invited him for an in-person meeting.
Perhaps, for the first time in many years, his life was finally about to fall into place.
Alex took a step forward, ready to join the line for boarding. At that moment, he suddenly heard a quiet, frightened voice beside him.
— Excuse me… sir… please help me…
He turned around. In front of him stood a little girl, maybe six years old. She was wearing a pink T-shirt and a denim dress. She was breathing quickly, as if she had been running for a long time.
— Please help me… my mom is sleeping and won’t wake up…
Alex froze for a second. He looked at his watch again. There was very little time left before boarding closed.
If he walked away now, the plane would leave without him. And with it, perhaps his only chance at the job he had been dreaming of.
BUT THE GIRL WAS LOOKING AT HIM WITH WIDE, TERRIFIED EYES, HER HAND TREMBLING AS SHE POINTED TOWARD THE WAITING AREA.
— There… my mom is over there…
Alex sighed — and suddenly turned around.
— Come on, show me.
They hurried through the terminal, almost running. The girl led him to one of the benches by the window. A woman, around thirty years old, was lying there. She was pale and motionless.
Alex bent over her.
He carefully touched her wrist to check her pulse and looked at her pupils. The pulse was weak, but present. The woman had simply fainted.
— DON’T WORRY, SHE’S ALIVE — he said quietly to the girl. — Everything will be okay soon.
He called airport services and requested medical assistance.
When the ambulance arrived, Alex was sitting beside the woman, gently sprinkling her face with water from a bottle and trying to bring her around. The girl sat next to him, holding his hand tightly.
When the doctors arrived and took the woman away on a stretcher, the board already showed: boarding closed. The plane had left. Alex stood in the middle of the airport, feeling nothing but emptiness and exhaustion.
A few minutes later, a message appeared on his phone from his landlord.
“If you do not pay your rent within three days, you will be evicted.”
Alex sank heavily onto a bench. Three days. He had only his last money left. The interview was now just an hour away, but he had no way of getting to another city.
HE STARED AT THE PHONE SCREEN FOR A LONG TIME, TRYING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT HE SHOULD DO. AND JUST THEN, ANOTHER MESSAGE ARRIVED.
Alex opened it — and froze in shock as he read it. 😱😲
“The job interview has been postponed until tomorrow. Our director had to urgently go to the hospital — his daughter was admitted.”
Alex read the message several times.
This was his last chance. He bought a new plane ticket, spending his last money.
The next day, Alex walked into the company’s office. A huge modern building, an elegant reception area, expensive furniture.
When the office door opened, he saw a man around sixty years old sitting behind a large desk. But beside him sat a woman. The same woman from the airport. She recognized him immediately.
Her eyes widened in surprise.
— DAD… IT’S HIM… — she said quietly. — HE’S THE MAN WHO HELPED ME AT THE AIRPORT YESTERDAY.
For a few seconds, silence filled the office.
The director looked at Alex внимательно.
— So it was you who saved my daughter?
Alex felt a bit embarrassed.
— I was just there at the right moment…
The woman shook her head.
— IF IT WEREN’T FOR HIM, THERE’S NO TELLING HOW IT WOULD HAVE ENDED.
The man slowly stood up from behind the desk, walked over to Alex, and extended his hand.
— You know — he said calmly — I’ve always believed that a person’s character matters more than any résumé. I think our company needs people like you.
That day, Alex walked out of the office with a new job.
