Sophie had been patient for weeks. She noticed the way David came home late, the way he avoided her eyes when she asked how his day was. He was distracted, distant, and always on his phone.
At first, she convinced herself it was stress. But when it didn’t stop, suspicion grew.
One night, while they were having dinner, she couldn’t take it anymore.
“Who is she?” Sophie demanded, her voice breaking.
David blinked. “What are you talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb with me,” she snapped. “You’ve been hiding something. The phone, the late nights, the lies. I’m not stupid, David.”
The color drained from his face. “Sophie… it’s not like that.”
“Then what is it?” she cried. “If you’re not cheating, then say it.”
The silence stretched. David’s hands trembled as he set his fork down. Finally, he whispered, “I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to look at me differently.”
Sophie frowned, her anger wavering. “Tell me what?”
He took a deep breath. “I’ve been going to the doctor. I’ve been… getting tests. They diagnosed me with something serious. I didn’t want to burden you until I knew for sure.”
The air left Sophie’s lungs. The anger in her chest melted into shock.
“I thought I was protecting you,” David continued, his voice breaking. “I didn’t want you to worry. I didn’t want you to pity me.”
Sophie covered her mouth, tears streaming. She had been so sure he was betraying her — when in reality, he was carrying a weight too heavy to share.
She reached across the table and grabbed his hand. “You don’t have to go through this alone,” she whispered.
The fight was over. The secret was out. And while the future was uncertain, Sophie knew one thing for sure: their love would be tested — but not broken.
