The man approached the seller — a middle-aged man — who explained that the refrigerator had been sitting in his father’s house and hadn’t been used for many years. The house was about to be demolished, and all the belongings would end up in the trash anyway.
The price was ridiculously low — so low that the man initially assumed the appliance must be broken.
However, he had recently decided to set up a small storage space in his yard for vegetables and tools, so he figured that even if the refrigerator didn’t work, it could still serve as a regular cabinet.
He paid a very small amount and asked his neighbor, who owned a small truck, to help him transport the refrigerator to his yard.
The two of them, with great effort, loaded the refrigerator they had bought at the market onto the vehicle, secured it with ropes so it wouldn’t shift during the drive, and brought it to his home. 😥😥
When they arrived, they unloaded the refrigerator and placed it in the yard, under an apple tree. The man decided to open it right away to check what condition it was in inside.
The handle was slightly rusted, but after a moment of effort, the door finally opened — and what he saw inside completely surprised him.
ON THE LOWER SHELF OF THE REFRIGERATOR, BENEATH OLD DOCUMENTS AND YELLOWED FABRIC, THERE WAS A SMALL METAL BOX. HE CAREFULLY TOOK IT OUT AND OPENED IT.
Inside were old photographs, letters, and thick banknotes — still from Soviet times — as well as several gold coins.
One of the photographs showed the house from which the refrigerator had been taken, and on the back there was an inscription: “Whoever finds this, remember — this is the history of our family.”
The man stared at the items for a long time, realizing that he had not accidentally bought an ordinary old refrigerator, but someone’s entire life filled with memories. Money no longer mattered to him.
There was only one thought left in his mind — to find the heirs of the former owners of the house and return to them what belonged to their family.
As the sun set that evening, the refrigerator no longer looked like a piece of rusted metal.
It had become a bridge between the past and the present, and the man realized that his “cheap purchase” had turned out to be one of the most valuable things in his life.
