I was walking down the street, hurrying to work. An ordinary morning, nothing unusual. I was lost in my own thoughts, watching my steps, when suddenly a loud crack came from above. I looked up and saw a window on the fifth floor shatter. Glass rained down, and a moment later something began to fall.
A second later, I realized: it was a child.
There was no time to think. I just rushed forward, stretched out my arms, and caught the little one. We both hit the asphalt. I struck my head and back hard, my vision blurred, but the child was alive. It was crying — and that meant it hadn’t all been in vain.
People immediately gathered around us. Someone called an ambulance, someone else tried to find the child’s parents. They held me up, telling me not to close my eyes. Everyone kept repeating the same thing: that I was a hero, that I had saved a life.
At the hospital, I was diagnosed with a concussion and multiple bruises. It hurt, but that didn’t matter. The most important thing was that the child had survived. I didn’t even know whether his parents had been found or what had happened to him afterward.
But a week later, I received a court summons.
The child’s parents had sued me. They claimed that I had harmed their son and that I had acted recklessly, causing his injuries. I couldn’t believe it. When I tried to speak with them, the father shouted, “You are the ones who hurt our child!” and slammed the door in my face.
IN COURT, IT LOOKED AS IF I REALLY HAD DONE SOMETHING WRONG. THEIR LAWYER PRESENTED PHOTOS AND INSISTED THAT I HAD ACTED IRRESPONSIBLY.
The parents cried and described how much their child had suffered. They brought in witnesses I had never seen before. All of them testified against me.
My lawyer said it would be better to settle. But I refused. I knew I had saved a life and had done nothing wrong.
On the final day of the trial, I realized I was losing. The judge looked at me as if everything had already been decided. I felt completely helpless. And that was when something happened that left everyone stunned 😨😲
Suddenly, a woman entered the courtroom whom I had never seen before. She said she had been on that street on the day of the accident and had recorded everything on her phone.
When the footage was played, silence fell. In the video, it was clearly visible how the child fell out of the window and how I caught him at the very last moment.
It became clear that the mother was responsible for the fall, and that I had only saved the child. And that if it hadn’t been for my reaction, the little one would have had no chance.
AFTER ALL OF THIS, THE PARENTS WERE CHARGED WITH GIVING FALSE TESTIMONY AND WERE STRIPPED OF PARENTAL RIGHTS. I WAS ACQUITTED.
I walked out of the courtroom with one thought: I would do it again. Even knowing how it might end. Because a human life is more important than anything else.
