The morning at Anna’s house began again with tension and arguments. Once again, she argued with her father about ballet shoes. The girl had been taking dance classes for three years and dreamed that one day she would become a true ballerina. In the studio, the other girls had beautiful outfits and expensive pointe shoes, while she still practiced in old, worn-out ones.
What hurt her the most were the shoes. They were worn out, darkened, and in places, battered, and Anna was convinced that it was because of them that everyone looked at her with pity.
Her father had been getting ready for work since the morning. He worked at a construction site, took on the hardest tasks, and returned home exhausted, with sore back and rough hands from labor. Anna started insisting again that he buy her new ballet shoes. She said she was ashamed to go to class, that a performance was coming up, that others were laughing at her.
Her father calmly explained that they didn’t have money right now, that they would have to wait a little longer, but that he would definitely figure something out. However, Anna no longer wanted to listen. In anger, she grabbed the old shoes and threw them directly at her father.
He just lowered his gaze, picked them up from the floor, and didn’t say a word. Anna quickly got dressed and left for the training, slamming the door. She felt like no one understood her. He stood in the hallway for a moment with the shoes in his hands, as if thinking about something. Finally, he took them with him and went to work.
It was a tough day at the construction site. And yet, even there, her father couldn’t stop thinking about his daughter. During the break, he took out the old ballet shoes, carefully cleaned them, scrubbed off the dirt, washed the worn-out areas, and then found some gold paint and began carefully covering the material with it.
By the end of the day, the shoes looked completely different. They sparkled and looked almost new. They weren’t perfect, but they were beautiful and elegant.
Her father looked at them and, for the first time that day, smiled. He really wanted to make his daughter happy. So, after work, tired and in his work clothes, he immediately went to the dance school.
There was a rehearsal going on in the ballet hall. The girls stood at the barre, repeating their movements. Anna tried not to get distracted until a quiet rustle passed through the room. One of the dancers noticed the man in the doorway and looked at him, surprised. In a moment, the others turned to look as well. Within seconds, everyone was already staring in his direction.
— Who is that?
— What is he doing here?
— Why does he look like a homeless person?
— Ugh, he smells…
At first, Anna didn’t understand who they were talking about, but when she turned around, she froze. Her father was standing in the doorway. Tired, dusty, wearing an old work jacket.
— Sweetheart, I brought your shoes — he said. — Look, I fixed them. Now you can practice calmly and perform.
At that moment, the room fell silent, and then someone giggled. Soon, laughter spread throughout the room.
— Is that your father?
— Are you from a poor family?
— How embarrassing…
Anna felt her face burning. All the eyes turned toward her, and instead of going to her father, thanking him, and hugging him — she was scared of the laughter.
— He’s not my father — she said sharply. — He’s my dad’s assistant.
Her father immediately fell silent. His face changed, but he still held the shoes in his hands.
Anna approached him, grabbed the shoes from his hands, and angrily threw them on the floor.
— GET OUT OF HERE, YOU’RE EMBARRASSING ME — SHE SAID LOUDLY, SO THAT EVERYONE COULD HEAR.
Her father didn’t explain himself, didn’t argue, didn’t say a single harsh word. He just looked at his daughter, bent down, picked up one of the shoes, set it down, and slowly left the room.
But then something unexpected happened, after which Anna bitterly regretted her behavior 😱😨
Only when the door closed behind him did Anna feel a heaviness inside. However, her pride didn’t allow her to run after him. She pretended nothing had happened, picked up the shoes, dusted them off, and returned to practicing.
That evening, her father didn’t come home at the usual time. He came very late, when Anna was already in her room. He didn’t stop by, didn’t say anything, and from that day on, he became even more silent.
The next day, there was a box on Anna’s bed. Inside were new ballet shoes — not refurbished, but completely new.
Anna was so happy that she hugged them to herself and ran to training.
AFTER THE COMPETITION, SHE RECEIVED A TITLE, A DIPLOMA, AND PRAISE FOR HER TECHNIQUE AND ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. EVERYONE SMILED AT HER, CONGRATULATED HER, AND THE GIRLS WHO HAD LAUGHED AT HER JUST THE DAY BEFORE NOW LOOKED AT HER COMPLETELY DIFFERENTLY.
Anna stood with the award in her hands and suddenly realized that she had no one to share this joy with. Her father wasn’t there.
When she returned home, the phone rang almost immediately. The voice on the other side was strange. She was told that her father had been taken to the hospital. He had fainted at work. Due to exhaustion and endless overtime, he had suffered a serious attack.
Anna felt as though the ground had slipped from under her feet. She stood in the middle of the room, clutching the diploma, unable to believe what she was hearing.
In an instant, all the words she had said in the studio returned to her. She remembered his smile, how he held the golden, refurbished ballet shoes, how quietly he left without saying a word.
She ran to the hospital, not feeling her legs or breath. She was shaking with fear as she stood by the hospital room door. When she entered, she saw her father lying in bed — very pale, emaciated, extremely weak. His strong hands, accustomed to hard work, lay motionless on the blanket. Anna approached, sat beside him, and couldn’t stop her tears.
— Dad, forgive me — she whispered, holding his hand. — Please, forgive me. It’s my fault. I was awful. You wanted to do something good for me, and I… I am so ashamed of what I said. I should have never behaved that way. Never.
TEARS FLOWED DOWN HER FACE, ONE AFTER THE OTHER. SHE NO LONGER THOUGHT ABOUT THE GIRLS FROM THE STUDIO, ABOUT THE OPINIONS OF OTHERS, ABOUT THE BEAUTIFUL SHOES, OR THE AWARDS. IN THAT MOMENT, SHE WANTED ONLY ONE THING — FOR HER FATHER TO OPEN HIS EYES AND HEAR HER.
After a while, he regained consciousness. He saw his daughter next to him, saw her tears, and weakly squeezed her hand. And Anna cried even more because, at that moment, she understood the most important thing.
