I Was Climbing a Ladder to Cut Dry Branches When My Dog Suddenly Started Barking and Pulling Me Down by My Pants — Seconds Later, I Realized He Had Saved My Life

I was just climbing up the ladder to cut the dry branches of the old apple tree next to the house when my dog suddenly started barking and pulling me down, grabbing my pant leg with his teeth. At first, I thought he had simply gone crazy or wanted to play and might accidentally knock me off the ladder.

I tried to push him away and even got annoyed with him, but a few seconds later, something completely unexpected happened. 😨

I was already halfway up the ladder, reaching out with the pruning shears toward the dry branches of the old apple tree growing beside the house. The morning had felt strange from the very beginning. The sky was covered with heavy gray clouds, the air was still and damp, like before a strong storm. I could sense that the weather was changing, but I decided to finish the job anyway, since those dry branches should have been cut long ago.

I had set up the ladder earlier that morning, leaning it carefully against the trunk and checking that it was stable. I climbed a few steps and was just about to cut the first branch when suddenly I felt someone pulling me from behind by my pants.

I turned around and for a moment was genuinely confused. My dog was trying to climb the ladder after me. His paws were slipping on the metal rungs, his claws scraping against the metal, and his eyes were wide open, fixed directly on me.

— Hey, what are you doing? — I said with a nervous smile. — Get down.

I WAVED MY HAND, HOPING HE WOULD BACK OFF, BUT THE DOG DIDN’T MOVE AWAY. ON THE CONTRARY — HE CLIMBED HIGHER, PLANTED HIS FRONT PAWS AGAINST THE LADDER, AND SUDDENLY GRABBED MY PANT LEG WITH HIS TEETH.
He started pulling. Hard.

I jerked suddenly and almost lost my balance.

— Have you lost your mind? Let go! — I said irritably.

But he wouldn’t let go. He pulled me downward, bracing himself with his paws and barking as if he was trying to stop me at all costs.

At first, I got angry, but after a few seconds, I realized this didn’t look like play at all. He had never behaved like this before. There was something different in his eyes.

As if he was trying to tell me something.

I tried once more to climb higher, but the dog immediately tugged at my pant leg again, pulling so hard that I instinctively grabbed the ladder with both hands.

I LET OUT A HEAVY SIGH AND STARTED CLIMBING DOWN.
— Alright, that’s enough — I muttered. — If you don’t calm down, I’ll lock you in the kennel.

The dog lowered his head, as if he understood I was angry, but I still led him to the fenced area and shut the gate. I thought that now I would finally be able to finish the job in peace.

But at that very moment, something happened that terrified me, and suddenly I understood why my dog had been acting so strangely 😱😲I walked back toward the ladder and placed my foot on the first rung. And at that exact moment, a loud crack echoed above my head.

The sound was dry and sharp, as if something had snapped in half. Instinctively, I looked up. And I saw a huge dry branch breaking away from the tree.

It was falling exactly where my head had been just a second earlier. The branch crashed to the ground with a deafening thud, shattered into pieces, and passed just a few centimeters from me.

MY LEGS GAVE WAY UNDER ME IMMEDIATELY. I STOOD BESIDE THE LADDER, STARING AT THE MASSIVE BROKEN BRANCH, MY HEART POUNDING SO HARD I COULD HEAR IT IN MY EARS.
Only then did I understand. My dog wasn’t bothering me. He was trying to stop me.

He sensed the danger before I did. Maybe he heard the cracking inside the tree, or maybe he simply felt that the branch was about to break. Slowly, I turned toward the fence.
The dog looked at me through the fence. His eyes were attentive and calm, and his tail moved slowly from side to side, as if he was waiting for me to finally understand.

I walked over, opened the gate, and knelt beside him. The dog immediately pressed himself against me.

I wrapped my arms around his neck and said quietly:

— You saved my life.

FROM THAT DAY ON, I NEVER AGAIN IGNORED HIS INSTINCT.
