Every morning, at exactly 6:30, my neighbor would come out into the yard with a yellow garden hose in her hands. And every day, it looked exactly the same — she watered a small patch of ground by the fence. Always the same one. The rest of the garden, where tomatoes, cucumbers, and strawberries grew, remained completely dry.
At first, I thought maybe some especially delicate plants were growing there. But after a few days, it became clear that there was absolutely nothing on that patch of ground. Only wet, dark soil.
One day, I could not hold back anymore and asked her:
— Why do you water exactly this spot every day?
The woman clearly became flustered. Her hands began to tremble, and without looking in my direction, she muttered:
— I have potatoes there… a special variety.
Potatoes? Every day and with that much water? I immediately felt that she was lying. Still, I decided not to press her and simply kept watching.
A WEEK PASSED. THE GROUND STILL REMAINED EMPTY, AND THE NEIGHBOR WAS BECOMING MORE AND MORE NERVOUS AND IRRITABLE. SOMETIMES I CAUGHT HER HEAVY STARE, AS IF SHE KNEW I WAS STARTING TO SUSPECT SOMETHING.
That night, I could not fall asleep. One thought would not leave me alone — what if something truly strange was hidden beneath that soil?
The next morning, I called the police. My report sounded absurd, but the officers agreed to come and check the situation. What they found in her yard shook everyone 😱😱
When the police officers entered the property, the neighbor immediately turned pale. She tried to explain that it was only a habit, that she did not like leaving plants without water. But the more she spoke, the more she became tangled in her own words.
One of the officers walked over to the wet soil and began digging. After a few minutes, the shovel struck something hard. When they removed another layer of earth… I almost screamed.
A human hand was sticking out of the ground.
It later came to light that it belonged to her husband, who had “mysteriously disappeared” several months earlier. The woman had killed him during an argument and buried the body in her own yard, counting on the fact that no one would ever discover anything.
SHE HAD SOWN PLANTS THERE TO HIDE THE BURIAL SITE, BUT BECAUSE OF HER PANICKED DAILY WATERING, THE SEEDS ROTTED, AND THE GROUND REMAINED EMPTY — AND THAT WAS EXACTLY WHAT GAVE HER AWAY.
Sometimes I think… if she had watered the entire garden, I probably would never have paid attention to it.
