When the young married couple’s baby daughter was born, their Golden Retriever named Laura immediately took on the role of caretaker. Dogs very often form a special bond with children, but Laura’s behavior quickly began to cause concern.
After a few days, something truly strange happened. For an entire week, every night, Laura would go up to the crib and sit beside it without moving. She did not lie down, did not fall asleep, and did not even walk away to drink water. She sat motionless and constantly watched the baby, quietly whining from time to time.
— Maybe she’s just guarding her — the mother smiled at first.
However, day by day, the dog’s behavior became more and more disturbing. Laura stayed beside the crib until dawn, while the parents slept in their room. In the morning, however, she behaved completely normally — she ate, slept, and played as usual.
The young mother began to feel afraid. “Why is she acting like this? I’m very worried about our little daughter. Maybe we should take her to the vet?”
To calm themselves down, the couple installed a night-vision camera aimed at the baby’s crib. The next morning, they watched the recording — and froze in terror… Their daughter had been in mortal danger…
At around 3:12 at night, Laura suddenly sprang to her feet, growled, and began barking furiously toward the window. In the footage, it can clearly be seen how the window very slowly and almost imperceptibly begins to open. A moment later, someone’s hand tried to move the mosquito screen aside.
THE DOG LUNGED TOWARD THE WINDOW, GRABBED THE CURTAIN WITH HER TEETH, AND, BARKING, JUMPED ONTO THE WINDOWSILL. THE HAND DISAPPEARED IMMEDIATELY. A SECOND LATER, SILENCE FELL AGAIN.
With trembling hands, the mother grabbed the phone and called the police.
It later turned out that for several weeks, a criminal had been operating in the area, breaking into homes through ground-floor windows. He targeted families with infants, hoping to catch the parents off guard and take advantage of their helplessness.
He was arrested two days later thanks to traces found beneath the window — pieces of a glove and drops of blood. Laura had managed to bite him.
From then on, the young parents never locked Laura in the kitchen at night again. She slept peacefully in the child’s room, curled up beside the crib. She no longer whined.
She knew she had done what needed to be done. She was simply protecting her family.
