That day was warm and peaceful.
The children were playing on the bank of a quiet river. They floated little boats made of bark, threw stones into the water, and laughed so loudly that the echo carried through the entire forest.
Suddenly one of them — Ilya, the most curious of the whole group — noticed something strange.
On the sand, almost right next to the water, lay a thick rope. One end of it disappeared beneath the muddy surface of the river, while the other was coiled on the shore.
— Look! — Ilya called out. — What if there’s some kind of treasure down there?
But his friends immediately began to grow worried.
— Better not touch it, maybe it’s just some kind of trash… — someone said uncertainly.
— Or a trap! — another boy added.
Despite his fear, Ilya bent down and grabbed the rope. It was wet and ice-cold. He pulled — and immediately felt resistance. There was definitely something heavy on the other end.
— I’m pulling it! — he shouted, but by then his friends had already backed away several steps. Someone laughed nervously, someone else turned pale.
— Let’s get out of here! — one of them yelled and was the first to run away.
A moment later, Ilya was left alone by the river. His heart was pounding like crazy.
He pulled again, this time much harder. The rope slowly gave way, as if something heavy were dragging along the bottom. The water began to churn, and something terrifying started rising from the depths.
Ilya froze, but he did not let go of the rope. He kept pulling until at last he clearly saw what had surfaced. 😱😱
It was a human body. Water was running down his face, his eyes were closed, and his clothes were stuck to his skin. The rope was wrapped around his waist, and dark bruising marks were visible on his neck.
ILYA SCREAMED IN TERROR. THE ROPE SLIPPED OUT OF HIS HANDS, THE BOY STEPPED BACK SEVERAL PACES AND STARTED RUNNING TOWARD THE VILLAGE. TEARS FILLED HIS EYES, HIS BREATH CAME IN BROKEN GASPS FROM FEAR, BUT HE DID NOT STOP FOR EVEN A MOMENT.
When the adults returned with him to the river, the current had already pushed the body closer to the shore. Later, it turned out that the man had been considered missing for more than a week.
And that rope — that very same rope — no one ever dared to touch again. To this day, it still lies on the bank, reminding everyone that sometimes ordinary curiosity can uncover a truly terrifying truth.
